George Coleman Jr. & Resurgance

The Statuary Presents

Live Recording

Date

08SEPT2023

One of Jersey City's master jazz musicians. Unerringly tasteful and powerfully swinging, drummer George Coleman, Jr. follows his own path in jazz even as he proudly embraces the legacy of his renowned parents. As a drummer, producer, composer, filmmaker, and son of two musical jazz greats, saxophone legend George Coleman Sr. and organist, composer and vocalist, Gloria Coleman, he was seven when master drummer Max Roach gave him his first set of drums. George studied with master teachers including Sam Ulano, Michael Carvin, Harold Mabern and Jamil Nasser. George’s most influential teacher was the late master percussionist Billy Higgins. Under his tutelage, George’s conceptual understanding of both the drums and the music he played broadened, which led Higgins to call him “one of the most talented and creative young drummers on the New York jazz scene.” On his 2023 debut as a leader, Resurgence, Coleman, Jr. unites all these strands under his own banner. His father’s Memphis roots and post-bop vernacular, his mother’s fiery soul-jazz organ sound, and his own study of Afro-Cuban drumming all come together in a compelling session.
